The house is the backdrop for most of the day, and it is a generous one — brick, symmetry, and lawns wide enough to get far enough back from it. You are never hunting for somewhere to stand.
Inside, the ceremony room takes light from the side and the dining room is the one worth arriving early for. I photograph every room before anyone is in it, because that is the only time you will see it the way it was set.

Winter here is an advantage, not a compromise
Katie and Duncan married here in November, and it made the day better rather than worse. The light is low and warm all afternoon instead of only at the end of it, so the window for photographs is hours wide rather than twenty minutes. The house lights up from about four.
What a winter wedding needs is a running order built around the dark rather than against it. Tell me your ceremony time and I will tell you exactly when to step outside.

How I work a day here
Nothing is posed. I photograph the day as it actually happens, from close enough to hear the joke and far enough not to be in it.
Silent shutter all day and no flash at all until the dancefloor, so the ceremony and the speeches stay undisturbed.
On the lawn, with the light already going.
