What a Coltsfoot Country Retreat wedding photographer is working with
Coltsfoot is spread out rather than stacked up. The barns, the lodges and the lawns sit in one fold of the Hertfordshire countryside, and a wedding here moves between them on foot rather than down a corridor. That is unusually good for documentary photography, because the gaps between things are where most of the day actually happens.
The buildings are low, dark timber under big skies, and the light around them is open on all sides. There is no single spot everybody gets photographed in, which means the pictures from one Coltsfoot wedding look nothing much like the pictures from the next.
Nobody is waiting for another wedding to finish, and nobody is being moved on. That changes the feel of a day more than couples expect.
The arch, the aisle and the lane
There is an ivy arch by the house that a bride can walk out through, and a lane running away from the buildings that makes a natural confetti line. Both are worth planning around, because both only happen once.
Confetti here works better as two lines along the lane than as a ring round a door. Ushers hold everybody until you are properly into the gap, you walk it slowly, and it is done in eight seconds without needing a second run.

Alpacas, dogs, and other things worth telling me about
There are alpacas in the field here, and couples do end up photographed with them. It is not something I would ever suggest — but if you want it, tell me on the planning call and we will build ten minutes in rather than improvising at the wrong end of the day.
Same for dogs, children who will not last past six, a grandparent who cannot walk far, or anything else that needs a bit of thought. None of it is a problem. All of it is easier if I know first.
