What an Atlantic Hotel wedding photographer is working with
The Atlantic was built in 1892 and stands on the cliffs above Newquay, surrounded by ocean views. Inside it is classic Victorian: a marble entrance, a sweeping staircase, a grand ballroom and a tea lounge. Outside there is a lawn looking over the sea.
I have photographed weddings here as an Atlantic Hotel wedding photographer. It is a venue with two personalities, formal and grand inside, wild and windy outside, and the good photographs come from using both.
The light at the Atlantic
The staircase and the big rooms give you soft, even window light for getting ready and for the quieter moments, which is useful on a coast where the weather changes by the hour.
Outside, the headland and the sea are at their best in the last half hour before sunset. That is the fifteen minutes I will ask you to keep free, and on a clear evening it is worth every second.
How I photograph the day
As your Atlantic Hotel wedding photographer I work documentary first. I stay in the background for getting ready, the ceremony and the drinks, then borrow the two of you three times for about fifteen minutes: after the ceremony, before dinner and at sunset.
Group photos take around half an hour from a list we agree in advance, often on the lawn with the sea behind, and then everyone is back to the drinks.
Planning an Atlantic Hotel wedding timeline
Work backwards from sunset. In June the sun sets around 9.30pm on this coast, in September around 7.35pm and in December about 4.15pm, so your golden-hour slot moves a long way through the year. The Cornwall page has sunset times for every month.
If you want a photograph on the staircase, it is best done early, before guests are moving through the hall. Five minutes is plenty.
For larger weddings, a list of group photographs agreed in advance keeps things moving on the lawn, and I will have them back to the drinks within half an hour.
