Barnston Lodge sits in the village of Barnston, just outside Great Dunmow in Essex. It is a reception venue: a Grade II*-listed Georgian house with its own lake, rose gardens and stables, set in around 200 acres of farmland. Couples bring in their own tipis or marquee, so no two weddings here look the same.
Most couples marry at a church nearby and arrive at the house for the party. That gives a Barnston Lodge wedding photographer a lovely rhythm to work with: the ceremony, a car pulling up at the front of the house, then a long, easy afternoon on the lawn. For rainy moments there is the old Brew House, a snug with a fire.
It feels like a garden party at a friend’s very large house, which is exactly the point.

The house faces out over open lawns, and in summer the evening sun comes in low across them. The best fifteen minutes of any Barnston Lodge wedding are usually just after the speeches: the front of the house glows, and the fields beyond it turn gold.
Inside a tipi the light through the canvas is warm and soft, which is ideal for speeches. I work without flash through the day and keep out of the way, so the photos are of what actually happened.
