What a Fistral Beach Hotel wedding photographer is working with
The hotel sits directly above Fistral Beach, about a two-minute walk from the sand. It is adults only and relaxed, with sea-view rooms and a bar looking straight out over the surf. The beach is the obvious backdrop, and it is a very good one.
I have photographed weddings here. The best of it is how quickly you can be on the beach: a few minutes away from your guests and you are standing on one of the most famous surf beaches in Britain.
Fistral light and tides
Fistral faces west, so the sun sets over the sea in front of you. On a clear evening that last half hour is the whole reason to marry on this stretch of coast, and I will build the day around it.
The tide changes Fistral completely. At low water there is a wide sweep of wet sand that mirrors the sky; at high water the beach narrows towards the dunes. I check the tide tables for your date as soon as you book, and I will tell you if low water and sunset line up.
How I photograph the day
As your Fistral Beach Hotel wedding photographer I work documentary first. I stay in the background for getting ready, the ceremony and the drinks, then borrow the two of you three times for about fifteen minutes each. One of those will almost always be on the beach, weather allowing.
Group photos take around half an hour from a list we agree in advance, and then everyone is back to the bar.
Planning a Fistral wedding timeline
The first thing a Fistral Beach Hotel wedding photographer should check is the sunset and the tide. Work backwards from both. In June the sun sets around 9.30pm here, in September around 7.35pm and in December about 4.15pm. The Cornwall page has sunset times for every month.
Give yourselves twenty minutes for the walk down to the sand and back, and a pair of flat shoes if the beach is on the plan. It is a short walk, but nobody wants to rush it.
Summer weekends on Fistral are busy. If you would like a quieter beach, an evening slot after the surf schools have packed up is usually the calmest time of day.

Usually, yes. It is a public beach, so there may be surfers and walkers in the background, which I tend to think adds to it. I will pick the stretch and the time that work best on the day.
