What a Headland Hotel wedding photographer is working with
The Headland stands on a private headland right beside Fistral Beach, surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic. Inside it is grand dining rooms and big Victorian windows; outside it is the cliff lawn, the coast path and one of the best surf beaches in the country directly below.
I have photographed weddings here, and the thing that strikes you every time is that you barely need to go looking for a backdrop. The view is in almost every frame, whether you want it or not.
The light at the Headland
The hotel looks straight out over Fistral, and the sun goes down over the sea in front of it. On a clear evening the last half hour turns the whole beach gold, and that is the fifteen minutes I will ask you to protect in your timeline.
Midday on the cliff lawn is bright and exposed, with wind straight off the Atlantic most days. I work with that rather than against it: faces turned out of the glare, hair allowed to move, and the grand rooms inside for anything that needs stillness.
Photographing a Headland wedding the documentary way
As your Headland Hotel wedding photographer, most of the day I am in the background: getting ready, the ceremony, your guests on the lawn with a drink and the surf behind them. Three times I will borrow the two of you for about fifteen minutes, usually after the ceremony, before dinner and at sunset, which is mostly walking and talking along the headland.
Group photos take around half an hour from a list we agree in advance. Then everyone is back to the drinks.
Planning a Headland Hotel wedding timeline
The first thing any Headland Hotel wedding photographer should ask is when the sun sets. Work backwards from it. In June the sun sets around 9.30pm on this coast, in September around 7.35pm and in December about 4.15pm, so the right time for your golden-hour portraits moves a long way through the year. If your ceremony is at the hotel, allow a relaxed hour afterwards for drinks on the lawn before any group photographs. Guests always head for the view first, and some of the best candid photographs of the day happen right there.
Fistral in summer is busy with surfers and walkers. That is part of its charm, and I will find quieter corners of the headland if you would rather have the coast to yourselves.
