What a Mill Barns wedding photographer is working with

The Mill Barns sits near Alveley, between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster, on the site of a seventeenth-century water mill beside a tributary of the River Severn. Today it is three oak-framed barns, the Mill Stone, the Mill Wheel and the Mill Pond, linked together so nobody has to step outside unless they want to.

Outside there are eight acres of gardens, the mill pond, water features, the Mill Race Walkway and three terraces. On a dry day the ceremony can move outside onto the Waterfront Terrace, overlooking the pond. It is exclusive use from late morning until midnight, with rooms on site for your guests.

Water on almost every side, and nobody there who was not invited.

The light at The Mill Barns

The first thing a Mill Barns wedding photographer should talk about is the water. The pond and the mill race reflect the light back up, which is lovely for portraits on the terraces, and the oak frames inside give warm, soft light for the speeches and the evening.

The walkway and the Waterfront Terrace are the natural places for your guests to spill out with a drink after the ceremony, and that first hour is where most of the best unposed photographs come from.

How I photograph a Mill Barns wedding

Documentary first, but not rigid: family group photos from your list, three short portrait sessions with gentle direction, and as much or as little posing as you want. The rest of the day I am in the background, photographing it as it actually happens.

As your The Mill Barns wedding photographer I keep group photos to around half an hour, usually on the Garden Terrace or by the pond, from a list we agree in advance. The three portrait slots are about fifteen minutes each: after the ceremony, before dinner and in the evening light.

I have photographed more than one wedding at The Mill Barns, in summer and in winter, so I know where the light falls on the terraces and how the day moves between the three barns.

Another wedding at The Mill Barns

A winter wedding this time: two brides, coloured smoke on the walkway, low January sun in the gardens and sparklers outside the barns at the end of the night. Same venue, a completely different day, which is exactly why I love photographing places more than once.

Planning your The Mill Barns wedding day

Because it is exclusive use, the day can move between the barns and the terraces at its own pace, with nobody else in the background of your photographs.

A few things I would suggest to any couple booking a Mill Barns wedding photographer. Keep fifteen minutes free by the water in the evening, when the light is lower and softer. Leave a relaxed hour after the ceremony before anyone is called for photographs. And if the forecast is dry, the outdoor ceremony on the Waterfront Terrace is worth it.

There is accommodation on site, so most couples and many guests stay over, which makes for a relaxed morning and a very good party. Everything else we talk through properly a few weeks before, when I help you with the timeline.
