What a Polhawn Fort wedding photographer is working with
Polhawn sits halfway down the cliff above Whitsand Bay, with its own cove below, a lawn for ceremonies, a roof terrace and thick stone walls. It is exclusive use, so most couples and their closest guests stay for the weekend.
It is one of the most dramatic places in Cornwall to get married, and the photographs mostly come from simply letting the setting be the frame.
The light at Polhawn
The fort faces south over the sea, so the middle of the day is hard and bright on the water. From about seven in the evening in summer the light softens and swings round, and that is when Polhawn is at its best.
I build portraits into that window, and into a short walk down to the cove if the tide allows it. I check the tide tables for your date as soon as you book.
Planning a Polhawn Fort wedding timeline
The first thing a Polhawn Fort wedding photographer should ask is when the sun goes down, because the best of this place happens in the evening. In June the sun sets around 9.30pm in Cornwall, in September around 7.35pm and in December about 4.15pm, so the right time for golden-hour portraits moves a long way through the year. Because Polhawn is exclusive use, most couples have their closest people there for the whole weekend. That makes for a slower, easier day, and it means the getting-ready photographs are full of people who actually know you.
