Sopwell House Wedding Photographer
A Georgian country house hotel in twelve acres of Hertfordshire countryside, twenty minutes from London. £2,500 all in.

What a Sopwell House wedding photographer is working with
Sopwell House is a Georgian country house on the edge of St Albans, set in twelve acres of grounds and about twenty minutes from London. It runs as a five-star hotel, so there is plenty of room for guests to stay, including the Mews Suites that make a lovely place to get ready.
There are several licensed spaces. The St Alban Suite takes up to 300 for a ceremony and opens onto a private terrace. The Oak Suite is more intimate, for up to around 100, with its own courtyard garden. There is also a gazebo in the grounds for outdoor ceremonies when the weather allows.
A proper country house, close enough to London for everyone to get there.

The light at Sopwell House
The first thing a Sopwell House wedding photographer notices is how much choice there is: the terrace, the courtyard garden, the gazebo and the grounds all give different light at different times of day.
Inside, I work with the window light and keep the flash away until the dancing starts. Outside, the terrace and the gardens are where your guests will gather with a drink, and that is where most of the best candid photographs happen.

The moment after the vows.

Speeches, from the guests’ side of the room.
How I photograph a Sopwell House wedding
Documentary first, but not rigid: family group photos from your list, three short portrait sessions with gentle direction, and as much or as little posing as you want. The rest of the day I am in the background, photographing it as it actually happens.
As your Sopwell House wedding photographer I keep group photos to around half an hour, usually on the terrace or the lawn, from a list we agree in advance. The three portrait slots are about fifteen minutes each: after the ceremony, before dinner and in the evening light.
I have photographed a wedding at Sopwell House, so I know how the day moves between the rooms, the terrace and the grounds.

Five quiet minutes outside in the evening.

First dance.
Planning your Sopwell House wedding day
Because Sopwell House is a hotel, most of your guests can stay on site, which makes for a relaxed morning and a late night.
A few things I would suggest to any couple booking a Sopwell House wedding photographer. If you are marrying outdoors, keep the gazebo ceremony flexible with an indoor plan ready. Leave a relaxed hour after the ceremony on the terrace before anyone is called for photographs. And keep fifteen minutes free in the evening for the grounds, when the light is at its best.
Everything else we talk through properly a few weeks before, when I help you with the timeline.
