Botleys Mansion Wedding Photographer

A Palladian house with a double staircase built for confetti, a glasshouse that never runs out of light, and grounds that keep giving until the sun goes down.

What a Botleys Mansion wedding photographer is working with

The staircase is the reason most couples book it, and rightly so. Confetti down both flights, a hundred guests along the stone balustrades, and the two of you in the middle of it — it is one of the few set pieces in the South East that photographs as well as it looks in your head.

The glasshouse takes the ceremony, and it is the opposite of the problem most country houses give you. Glass on every side, white florals, and none of the gloom that makes a photographer reach for flash at two in the afternoon.

Then the grounds open up. Long grass, mature trees, and a drive that works beautifully in the last hour of light.

The staircase is the photograph everyone remembers, but it is over in about twenty seconds. Being in the right place before it starts is the whole job.

The glasshouse, set for the ceremony. Light on every side and nothing bouncing off a dark ceiling — the easiest room in the house to photograph.

The staircase, and how to actually use it

Two lines rather than a ring. Guests on both flights, you walking up through the middle, and everybody throwing at once rather than in a slow ripple. It takes eight seconds to do and about two minutes to set up, which is time worth spending.

I photograph it from below and from the landing, and I do not ask anyone to do it twice. If it happens once and it happens properly, that is the picture.

From the landing, looking down. The balustrades put your guests in the frame without anyone being arranged.

Speeches, from the side with a long lens. The reactions are usually the photographs.

The grounds, and the twenty minutes worth protecting

Golden hour here is worth defending in your timings. Ten minutes in the grounds, no shot list, and you are back with your guests before anyone notices you left.

I will tell you roughly when that window falls for your date when you book, so it can be built into the running order rather than squeezed in around it.

A Botleys Mansion wedding photographer’s timeline, hour by hour

Timings move with your ceremony time, but this is the shape of most of the weddings I photograph. Nothing here is a rule — it is simply what tends to work.

10:00
I arriveBoth sides getting ready, wherever that is. Three hours before a one o’clock ceremony, and never in a rush.
13:00
CeremonyI work the sides and the back, quietly, on silent shutter. No flash, no interruptions.
13:30
ConfettiTwo lines, not a ring. It takes eight seconds and it is worth setting up properly.
13:45
Portraits, slot oneFifteen minutes, no shot list. Then you are back with your guests.
14:30
Drinks and groupsWhatever family groups you actually want, done in one go and not dragged out.
16:00
Wedding breakfastRoom shot before anyone is in it, then the details that matter and the faces during them.
17:30
SpeechesFrom the side, close, with a long lens. The reactions are usually the photographs.
19:30
Golden hourTen more minutes outside when the light drops. The best frames of the day are often here.
20:15
Cake and first danceThen the floor fills and I stop directing anything at all.
22:00
I leaveOnce the dancefloor is properly going. I do not sell hours, so nobody is counting them.

Straight answers

How many weddings have you photographed at Botleys Mansion?

One that is published, and it is at the bottom of this page. I will always tell you honestly how well I know a venue rather than imply more.

Where should we have the ceremony?

The glasshouse, if it is available. It is the brightest room on the site and it needs no help at all from me.

When should we do our couple photographs?

Two short slots: fifteen minutes after the ceremony and ten more when the light drops. Never one long session.

Do you use flash?

Not until the dancefloor. Silent shutter all day, so the ceremony and the speeches stay undisturbed.

You are based in Cornwall — is Surrey a problem?

No. Travel is included, there is no mileage charge, and I come up the night before where it makes sense.

The venue, and booking a Botleys Mansion wedding photographer

Botleys sits just outside Chertsey in Surrey, close enough to the M25 that guests arrive calm and far enough from it that you would never know.

I photograph one wedding a day and never book two. If your date is free, £500 holds it and the balance is due thirty days before.
