High House Wedding Photographer

A long white house in open Essex countryside with a lawn running down to a lake, a beamed barn for dinner, and a glass garden room that does most of the work on a bright day.

What a High House wedding photographer is working with

The barn is the traditional half — beams, chandeliers, the warm low light you want over dinner and speeches. The garden room is the opposite: glass on every side, globe lights overhead, and daylight that holds long after most ceremony rooms have gone flat.

Outside there is a courtyard that takes confetti well, gardens with room to spread out, a pool terrace, and the lake below the lawn. On a clear day the whole site photographs from the air, which is worth knowing when the drone is already in the price.

Two rooms that could not be less alike, and a day that can use both without anyone noticing the join.

The site from the air. Lawn, lake and flat Essex farmland — and no neighbouring building to work around.

The garden room, and why flash matters here

Glass on every side is a gift and a trap. The light is beautiful and there is nothing for flash to bounce off, which is why I do not use any until the dancefloor.

Silent shutter all day means the ceremony belongs to you rather than to the photographer. In a room with that much glass, a shutter is the loudest thing in it.

Since the refurbishment

The venue has had a refurbishment, and the pictures on this page are from after it rather than before. Anything you may have seen of mine from High House a few years ago is a different building in places.

I have photographed here more than once, and these are from Abi and Sam’s day.

A High House wedding photographer’s timeline, hour by hour

Timings move with your ceremony time, but this is the shape of most of the weddings I photograph. Nothing here is a rule — it is simply what tends to work.

10:00
I arriveBoth sides getting ready, wherever that is. Three hours before a one o’clock ceremony, and never in a rush.
13:00
CeremonyI work the sides and the back, quietly, on silent shutter. No flash, no interruptions.
13:30
ConfettiTwo lines, not a ring. It takes eight seconds and it is worth setting up properly.
13:45
Portraits, slot oneFifteen minutes, no shot list. Then you are back with your guests.
14:30
Drinks and groupsWhatever family groups you actually want, done in one go and not dragged out.
16:00
Wedding breakfastRoom shot before anyone is in it, then the details that matter and the faces during them.
17:30
SpeechesFrom the side, close, with a long lens. The reactions are usually the photographs.
19:30
Golden hourTen more minutes outside when the light drops. The best frames of the day are often here.
20:15
Cake and first danceThen the floor fills and I stop directing anything at all.
22:00
I leaveOnce the dancefloor is properly going. I do not sell hours, so nobody is counting them.

Straight answers

Have you photographed at High House since the refurbishment?

Yes. Every picture on this page is from after it. Abi and Sam’s full gallery is at the bottom.

Garden room or barn for the ceremony?

The garden room, if it is free. It is the brightest space on the site and it needs nothing from me.

Do you use flash?

Not until the dancefloor. In a glass room there is nothing for it to bounce off anyway.

You are based in Cornwall — is Essex a problem?

No. I worked this county for fifteen years. Travel is included and I come up the night before where it makes sense.

The venue, and booking a High House wedding photographer

High House sits in open countryside in Essex, the county I worked for fifteen years before moving home to Cornwall.

I photograph one wedding a day and never book two. If your date is free, £500 holds it and the balance is due thirty days before.
