What a Vaulty Manor wedding photographer is working with
Vaulty Manor sits in the Blackwater countryside outside Goldhanger, and the thing that makes it work for documentary photography is that it is not one building. There is the manor house, there is the barn, there is a lawn with a gazebo on it and a long tree-lined drive running away from the lot — so a day here moves, and the moving is where most of the photographs are.
The barn is black weatherboard outside and light oak frame inside, which is a useful combination. The exterior gives you something graphic to place people against; the interior gives you height, pale timber and enough window to work without a flash.
Exclusive use means nobody is waiting for another wedding to finish and nobody is being moved on. It changes the pace of a day more than couples expect.
The gazebo, the barn, and choosing between them
The gazebo on the lawn is licensed, and so is the barn, which means an outdoor ceremony at Vaulty is a genuine choice rather than something you have to gamble the whole day on. Danielle and George married outside in October and it came off.
Wherever it happens, I shoot the ceremony from the sides and the back, quietly, on a silent shutter. Nobody is asked to repeat anything, and there is no flash anywhere near the vows.

The drive, and the last hour of light
The gravel drive up to the house is the thing to use here. It is long, tree-lined and gives you somewhere to put a couple without anybody standing in a flowerbed — and in October it is covered in leaf.
Late on, the light comes down it low and sideways, and ten minutes out there is worth more than half an hour in front of the barn doors earlier in the day. It is the slot I would protect when you build your timeline.
