A beach is the easiest place in the world to stop performing

Something happens to people when they take their shoes off. Shoulders drop. Guests who spent the morning worrying about the hat stop worrying about the hat. Children stop being on best behaviour and start being children. Everybody looks out at the water at some point and forgets there is a camera anywhere near them.

That is gold to me, because unposed is not a style I picked to sound different — it is the only way I work. I do not run a photoshoot in the middle of your wedding. I do not stand your family in rows unless you have specifically asked me to. I move around the edges, quietly, and photograph what is actually happening.

By the time your guests reach the sand, Newquay has gone. No traffic, no passers-by, no other wedding in the next field. Cliffs on three sides and the Atlantic on the fourth. It is one of the very few UK venues where the location does half the emotional work before anyone has said a word.

What the light does to a Lusty Glaze wedding photographer

A cove flanked by high cliffs behaves nothing like a walled garden in Surrey. Early in the day the cliff throws deep shade across half the beach while the sand and the water bounce light straight back up — which is flattering, and which most cameras get wrong if you leave them to it. Late in the day the sun drops out over the sea and the whole cove goes warm and low and long-shadowed for about forty minutes.

That forty minutes is the single best hour of the day at a venue like this, and it is the reason I plan the day backwards from sunset rather than forwards from the ceremony. Any Lusty Glaze wedding photographer worth booking should be doing the same thing.

How I would shoot your day as your Lusty Glaze wedding photographer

I usually start around three hours before the ceremony and photograph both of you getting ready, wherever you are. I do not stop at the first dance either — I stay until the story is finished, which is normally somewhere around 10pm when the dancefloor has properly gone.

Between those two points, the only time I will ask for you is in three short blocks of fifteen minutes.

Three slots. Fifteen minutes each. That is all.

The first is straight after the ceremony, while everyone else is moving towards drinks — you will not be missed. The second is before dinner is called. The third is at sunset, which on this beach is the one worth guarding in the timeline.

Forty-five minutes in total, split so it never feels like you have been removed from your own party. Compare that to the ninety-minute couple shoot a lot of photographers still build into the day, usually at exactly the moment the canapés come out.

Group shots, if you want them, take fifteen minutes and I will do them properly and quickly. Plenty of couples here skip them entirely and let me photograph everyone as they actually are — which, on a beach, is barefoot with a drink.

The tide decides more than you would think

Lusty Glaze is a tidal cove. At low water you have a great sweep of flat wet sand that mirrors the sky and gives you room to put people at a distance. At high water the beach narrows considerably and the interesting pictures move up towards the cliff, the huts and the deck.

Neither is worse. They just want different photographs, and it is worth knowing which one you are getting. I check the tide tables for your date as soon as you book, and if sunset and low water happen to line up I will tell you, because that is the version of the day I would build a timeline around. It is the sort of thing you want your Lusty Glaze wedding photographer to have thought about months before you do.
