Katy & Tom: A Magical Newland Hall Wedding
A wonderful, emotional Newland Hall wedding and in some ways cathartic wedding day at the fittingly sumptuous Newland Hall. Katy and Tom are truly lovely people who, over the past couple of years, have not enjoyed the happiness in life that they deserve.
Newland Hall at a glance
Newland Hall is a Grade II listed Tudor manor house in Roxwell, in the countryside about four miles from Chelmsford city centre. It is a wedding and events venue that offers exclusive use of the house and grounds, including a bridal room, for 10 to 200 guests. You can choose an indoor or outdoor ceremony, or marry in a local church and hold the reception at the Hall. Packages range from traditional and premium weddings to twilight, intimate and venue-only options.
As fun and exciting as weddings are, a photographer’s job is to remove themselves slightly from proceedings, so they can ably capture the experience and joy of others; when looking through the viewfinder, sometimes it can feel like you’re not quite there. Because of this, I find myself working largely unaffected by those moments of great emotion that every wedding has – little, barely perceptible moments of great humanity delivered in the words and on the faces of those attending and taking part – hoping instead just to capture them for others.
This wedding however, was a little different. I’m convinced that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house during the speeches, and the day as a whole felt energised by great emotion. It was a tremendously affecting experience.
Newland Hall Wedding Photography
I feel truly honoured that Katy and Tom entrusted me to capture their brilliant day that felt like it was something even greater than most people’s biggest occasion. Naturally, I’m also delighted that they were so happy with the images I delivered.
The wedding started at the impressive Writtle Church before moving onto Newland Hall, Roxwell.

Photographing a Newland Hall wedding
Katy and Tom’s wedding in September 2016 started with the ceremony at Writtle Church, then moved on to Newland Hall in Roxwell for the rest of the day. It was one of the most emotional weddings I’ve photographed. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house during the speeches. When a day is that full of feeling, my job is to stay quietly in the background and catch the faces, the reactions and the small moments for everyone else.
