What a Cornwall beach wedding photographer is working with

A beach wedding in Cornwall means working with things nobody controls: the tide, the wind, and light that changes every ten minutes. That is most of the fun. The best beach photographs come from knowing when to be on the sand and when to wait, and from being ready when the sky does something unexpected.

Most Cornish beach weddings happen in one of three ways: a legal ceremony on a licensed beach, a ceremony at a venue above the beach with photographs on the sand afterwards, or a legal ceremony elsewhere and a beach blessing later in the day.

The tide decides the timetable, not the other way round.

Where to have a beach wedding in Cornwall

Lusty Glaze near Newquay is licensed for legal ceremonies on the sand itself, which is rare in England: you can marry right down to the water’s edge in a private cove. Carbis Bay, on St Ives Bay, has a wedding hut on its own beach. Along Fistral, the Headland Hotel, the Fistral Beach Hotel and the Atlantic Hotel all look straight over the surf, and Polhawn Fort has its own cove below Whitsand Bay.

Public beaches are a different matter. A ceremony on one is not a legal wedding in England, and some beaches need permission from the landowner or the council, so most couples marry at a venue and walk down to the sand for photographs.

How I photograph a Cornwall beach wedding

Being a Cornwall beach wedding photographer is mostly about reading conditions. I was born here and have photographed weddings on this coast since 2009, so I know which beaches catch the evening sun, which ones lose it behind the cliffs early, and where to go when the wind picks up. That local knowledge is the difference between hoping for good beach photos and planning for them, and it is why couples look for a Cornwall beach wedding photographer rather than someone who has never seen the beach before the day.

Documentary first, but not rigid: family group photos from your list, a few short portrait walks with gentle direction, and the rest of the day photographed as it happens. On the beach I keep things moving, because sand, wind and bare feet look best when nobody is standing still for long.

I check the tide times and the sunset for your date months in advance and build the portraits around them. Low water at golden hour is the dream. If the tide is in, there is always another angle from the rocks, the steps or the clifftop.

Planning your Cornwall beach wedding photography

Keep twenty minutes free around sunset for the sand. Tell guests about shoes: heels and beaches do not mix, and a basket of flip-flops at the top of the steps is always popular. Have a plan for wind, because veils and hair behave very differently on the coast, and a plan for rain, which in Cornwall usually means waiting fifteen minutes.
